So it’s time to remodel your bathroom. Bathroom remodels are one of the more expensive home renovations, but for good reason. You’re turning your boring bathroom into a place that you’ll love to lounge in the tub for hours.

But how do you plan for a bathroom remodel? What should you do? We’re here to offer some advice to help you out.

Read on for our brief bathroom renovation checklist.

Set a Budget for Home Renovations

The first thing on your bathroom remodel checklist should be making your budget. You need to know a basic home renovation cost before you go wild planning out your new bathroom.

If your bathroom is part of a full home remodeling project, remember that you’re only able to use a small portion of your budget for it.

If you’re only working on the bathroom, your job is easier. Remember that you’re going to need money for (among other things):

  • Plumbing
  • Floors
  • Walls
  • Storage (such as cabinets)
  • Decorative features
  • Materials
  • The contractor themself

A bathroom remodel isn’t going to be cheap, but you don’t want to cut corners.

Figure Out Your Wants and Needs

Once you have your budget, start splitting it into wants and needs. It’s a good idea to leave some “wiggle room” just in case something ends up costing more than you had anticipated. This is where the “sub-checklist” comes in.

To figure out your wants, it’s helpful to look at examples of bathrooms that you’d love to have. You don’t have to mimic them, but figure out what elements attracted you to each example and write them down (or better yet, collect pictures on a vision board).

Your needs come first when it’s time to start planning. Consider things like:

  • Your bath or shower (or both)
  • Your sink(s)
  • Your flooring
  • Your cabinets

These things are necessities, but they’ll look different in every remodeling project.

When it comes to your “wants,” you get to start considering the aesthetic appeal of your new bathroom. How large do you want your mirrors? Are you trying to expand your storage space?

Remember, you can’t cover “wants” until you’ve paid for “needs.”

Find the Right Contractor

The right contractor is everything when it comes to a successful bathroom renovation. Again, this isn’t a place to cut corners.

Look at local contractors and visit their websites. If you have friends who have recently done home remodels, consider taking their suggestions. It’s easier to trust friends than it is to trust online reviews.

When you narrow down your list, look at examples of their work. Not all contractors, even if they’re wonderful, are going to be a perfect fit for you.

When you’ve picked one, have a conversation. Talk about your budget and consider asking for more projects from their portfolio.
