Early Life
Melissa O’Neil was born on July 12, 1988, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her mother is Chinese Canadian and came from Hong Kong. Her father is Irish Canadian. She studied at Lester B. Pearson High School in Calgary. During school, she joined musicals and also played sports like basketball and rugby.
Music Beginnings
In 2005, O’Neil won Canadian Idol while she was still in high school. She was the first woman and the youngest person to win the show. Her first single, “Alive,” reached number one on the Canadian charts and stayed there for four weeks. It was later certified four times platinum.
