What Is the International Life Sciences Institute?
The International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) is a global nonprofit that focuses on scientific research to advance nutrition and food safety. This organization combines resources from academia, government, and private industry. The ISIL has its headquarters in Washington, D.C. but has offices throughout the world, including Europe, South America, and Asia.
The ISIL is a 501 (c) (3) organization. As this type of organization, it is tax-exempt and any donation to it can be written off. No shareholder can profit from this type of organization.
The ISIL is run by a Board of Trustees, and it is mandated that half of the members be from the private sector. It does not lobby or take political positions. The non-lobbying stance is stated in the organization’s by-laws.
What Are the Major Areas of Focus for the ISIL?

The focus of the ISIL with regards to food safety has been enhancing detection and prevention of contamination to sources of food and water. One of the areas of research is agricultural biotechnology, which includes specifics like increasing crop yield and insect resistance.
Nutrition and Health
The ISIL’s programs in health and nutrition focus on nutrition during the aging process. Some of the focus areas include nutrition for brain aging and consumer food choices.
Risk Science and Toxicology
This research area focuses on the reduction of risk to both the environment and the human population. It includes researching the safety of food, water, drugs, and other products. Some specific topics in this area include alternatives to testing on animals and the risk of transgenic crops (commonly referred to as GMOs).
Sustainable Agriculture and Nutrition Security
The ISIL focuses its research in this department on the growing issue of world hunger and food insecurity, along with the increasing impacts of climate change. Subtopics in this area include reducing food waste and sustainable diets.
What Partnerships or Collaboratives Is the ISIL Involved In?
While having expansive partnerships in many areas, the ISIL recently reached an agreement to partner with the Association of Official Agricultural Chemists (AOAC).
Through this collaboration, the AOAC and the ISIL will work together for five years on projects that are mutually beneficial to both.
