What You Can and Can't Bring Into a Drug Recovery Clinic

Most drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities have strict policies about the items their patients can bring into the facility, often on a case-by-case basis. These rules vary from facility to facility, but they usually have one thing in common: They’re designed with the goal of keeping patients safe while they’re under treatment at the rehab.

While some restrictions may be understandable, others may seem unnecessarily restrictive. Even so, it’s important to know what you can and cannot bring into a drug recovery clinic to keep yourself and everyone else safe while staying there.

Here’s a list of what you can and can’t bring to a drug recovery facility.

What You Can Bring Into a Drug Rehabilitation Facility

1. Change of Clothes

Even though you’re going to stay for a few months at the rehab clinic, you don’t need to pack many clothes. What you do need to do is a few things to pack items that will make your stay at rehab a little more comfortable.

While there might be no set rules for what everyone should wear, you want to try and dress to the occasion. If you’re going to go outside, it’s probably not the best idea to wear anything that shows dirt or sweat.

Even though most people will wear track pants and sweatshirts, it wouldn’t hurt if you packed a suit in case you have to attend something more formal.

2. A Couple of Books

If you enjoy reading while in rehab, bring a few books you can read while you’re bored. It’s also a good way to stay busy and distracted when recovering from an addiction.

This can be especially helpful if you have any issues with anxiety and need something to focus on while feeling anxious.

3. A Will to Recover

It’s important to remember that you’re in drug treatment to get better. Even if you’ve been struggling with an addiction for a long time, if you don’t have the will to recover, you may struggle with feelings of shame and guilt about your addiction.

Items You Cannot Bring Into a Drug Recovery Clinic

1. Cigarettes or Alcohol

If you’re going to a drug treatment center, you shouldn’t bring any cigarettes or alcohol with you. If you bring these items, they might be confiscated, or you may be asked to leave the center.

2. Weapons

If you have any weapons with you when you arrive at a drug treatment center, you’ll most likely be asked to leave as you might be exposing staff or other patients to serious danger.

3. Unapproved Medication

If you’re using drugs not approved in a drug recovery center, you should not bring them in. But if the medication is critical to your health, you should consult the resident physician to ensure you’re all on the same page.

The Bottom Line

Drug recovery centers are designed to help patients get better. As such, they typically have strict rules about what and who can be brought into the facility. Violating the center’s rules could result in serious consequences, such as getting kicked out of the center — and that’s something you don’t want to happen while you’re in treatment.
